Goleta, Santa Barbara County
Goleta, whose name is Spanish for schooner, became a city in 2002. On February 23, 1942, a Japanese submarine surfaced offshore and shelled the Ellwood oil field on its western edge, one of the few attacks on the American mainland during World War II. Each winter thousands of monarch butterflies cluster in the eucalyptus groves on the nearby bluffs.
